President Carol Yaw opened the November 2nd meeting of the Priscilla Club with a Thanksgiving poem, then called the meeting to order. Secretary Donna Taylor read the minutes of the October meeting, which were approved.
Treasurer Marcella Coy gave the treasurer’s report, which was also approved.
Yaw announced the December meeting will be the annual Christmas Luncheon, held on December 7th at noon at Randall Manor.
The program will be the Christmas Gift Exchange with a $10.00 limit. Hostesses will be Carol Yaw and Caroline Heath with roll call by Marcella Coy.
Roll call was given by Marylou Reader, who asked each attendee to share their Thanksgiving routines, memories and traditions as well as whether they spend Thanksgiving weekend decorating their homes for Christmas.
Reader announced she had delivered a planter to member Dorothy Quick, who had recently been in the hospital, but was now back home.
Kay Fidler announced the annual Christmas in Chrisman parade and chili supper is currently being planned for Wednesday, December 7th.
Watch the Chrisman Leader for further details.
A thank you note from Alice Lientz was read, thanking the club for welcoming her and allowing her to become an associate member at this time.
A motion by Caroline Heath, seconded by Marcia Yontz, was made to donate $50.00 to ‘Shop with a Cop’ in Paris, and $50.00 for the Cardinal Cupboard at Chrisman Schools. All voted in favor of these donations.
For the program, Crystal Jenkins invited Cheri Oates, Assistant Librarian at the Chrisman Public Library to give a presentation on the history of the library and some of the services offered.
Cheri reported that the library is officially sixty-five years old with the 1957 City Council passing an ordinance to establish a public library.
Before that time, as early as 1903, a local general store put up shelves with books to lend.
At one time, you only had to donate a book to become a member of the library.
In 1938, an unofficial library was opened in the Methodist Church. In 1950, the library moved to the Municipal Office Building.
In 1957, a library tax was established to fund the library and pay the librarian.
In 1974, the library was moved to the old Nazarene Church on Illinois Street, but in 2000, it was no longer possible to apply for library grants and the church was not handicap accessible.
In 2001, the Ben Cook family donated the two buildings on the southwest corner of the square to be used as the library.
Plans were set in motion to ready the buildings and $40,000 and countless hours of labor were donated by community volunteers to get the work done.
In January 2004, the library was moved into the new building. Many community members, including Chrisman students, moved all the books down the street to be beautifully decorated and outfitted new location.
In 1974, the library consisted of approximately 6,000 books and today it houses in excess of 22,000 books and videos.
Today, the library loans out 300 plus books a month to the community, and loans 350 plus books a month to other libraries in the system. Books can be ordered in person or online from other libraries and are delivered to Chrisman every week for our readers.
Cheri gifted each attendee with five book marks, which were designed by students from the Chrisman Elementary School.
The book marks are for sale at the library and include a timeline of the library on the back, as well as all librarians who have served.
Attending the meeting, held at Randall Manor, were members Mary Marvin, Crystal Jenkins, Caroline Heath, Marcella Coy, Carol Yaw, Marylou Reader, Marcia Yontz, Donna Taylor, Kay Fidler, Judy Holbert, Rita Hoult and guest Cheri Oates. Pumpkin pie was prepared by Karen Randall and served by Linda Hahn.
