October is blowing away like a leaf in the wind. November is here and it brings with it the reminder of Thanksgiving.
This time of the year brings us to the Season of Giving all around. There are many stories in the Bible about giving. Perhaps the most interesting to me, is the one when Jesus talks about a widow who gave a small amount of money, and Jesus said she gave more than those who gave a lot.
To Jesus, the widow’s “mites” were worth more to the kingdom of Heaven, than all the gold bars in Fort Knox. Why is that? Because God cares more about the heart of the giver than the actual amount. How should we give our time, talents and treasures, to the people around us? How should we give our love? These are the real questions that we all have to ask at some point. I must admit that often we live with fear that there won’t be enough to go around.
The world often teaches us that you have to fight to get what is ours. Without realizing it, this affects the way we give away our love too. We love people by giving away our time, our attention and our money and I might add even our personal space.
This is done in a world where we are told to store up and gain more to get more. But Jesus said, Whatever, you have to give, give it generously. The amount won’t matter to God, but the heart will.
Be a little reckless with your love.
We are rivers not reservoirs. God sees the golden heart that gives sacrificially, no matter the amount. Ask yourself what you can give? “Give, and it will be given to you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken, and running over they shall give into your bosom; for with what you measure it will be measured back to you.” Luke 6:38
