If you’ve seen bleached, sublimated shirts being worn around Chrisman, chances are you its a shirt made by Hunter Creations.
Hunter Creations is run by Myka Hunter, who started the project in 2021.
In the beginning, Hunter started using heat transfer vinyl for her designs.
“I would always have issues with it peeling up after so many washes,” Hunter told us. “I started joining different groups on Facebook and researching everything I could about sublimation and bleaching shirts.”
Hunter started by putting cardboard or trash bags into the shirts. Next, the shirts are sprayed with bleach and left to process. “I usually let the bleach dry, then I put it in the washer and wash twice with cold water and then toss it in the dryer,” she said. “This is usually when I start printing sublimated prints.”
Once the shirt is dry, butcher paper is put inside and then the image is pressed on. Hunter then sprays the shirt with peroxide, after pressing, to remove scorch marks and lays the shirt in the sun. The shirt is then washed again to remove the smell of peroxide and dried.
“I then get it packaged up with washing instructions and print a shipping label if it’s getting shipped out.”
If a shirt size has to be ordered, then the turn around time is usually two weeks due to it taking a week for the shirt to be in Hunter’s hands. If she has the size, then it can generally get finished within a couple of days.
“It also depends on the weather,” Hunter said. “Now that it’s getting colder, it takes longer for the bleach to process.”
Hunter does offer custom creations, making the experience for her that much better. “No two shirts will be the same and there’s different bleaching techniques to try,” Hunter said. “I currently use RIT dye, but I am wanting to try powder dyes and doing more than one color.”
Last year, Hunter did a lot of shirts and sweatshirts for her favorite sprint car team so they can have them for their merchandise.
“Currently, my school pride and fall vibes shirts and sweatshirts have been a hit.”
When you make a lot of designs, sometimes it’s hard to have a favorite, but for Hunter, her choice is easy.
“My favorite creation to make would have to be Christmas stuff,” she said. “There’s so many cute designs to chose from.”
Ideas are usually found on Etsy, but Hunter tends to do designs that others aren’t doing.
In addition to the shirts, she also makes sublimated coffee mugs and is currently experimenting with air fresheners and hair scrunchies. With Thanksgiving and Christmas coming soon, be sure to look out for any new designs on the Hunter Creations Facebook page.
