There are a number of things to look forward to this fall. We have the annual Library Crawl during the month of October. We really encourage you to visit other libraries. There are “passports” available to have stamped by the library you are visiting and usually they have some little gift for you. Also “Scare on the Square” is coming up on the last two weekends of the month. Kids just love it and so do many adults. We hope to be seeing you at both events.
The Adult Reading Program has ended! Nine adults participated and read 61 books in just a short period of time. Several free ice creams/soft drinks were graciously given by Riggen’s Frostop to the patrons who read five books and submitted their review. A couple gift certificates to the American Country Collection were awarded to the patrons who read ten books and submitted their review. The adults had to do exactly what we had the kids do! And the winner of the Vont Clip On Light is, drum roll please, Barb Oates!
Here are the last of the adult reviews:
“Bewilderment”, written by Richard Powers; review by M. Mary writes “This is a story about a single father whose nine year old son is intensely worried about the future of Earth from an environmental point of view.” M’s states that her favorite is that she “… appreciated the way the author makes his point about appreciating this world and nature, and how we can do our part to be good stewards of planet Earth.”
“The Poisonwood Bible”, Barbara Kingsolver, author; review by M. The story is about “… a family of missionaries from Georgia who go to the Congo in the 1950’s.” M’s favorite part: “The saga is packed with the social and political issues surrounding the phenomenon of the West trying to convert African nations.”
“Finding Me”, by Viola Davis; review by K. Per K, this is “A memoir of Viola Davis’s life – her tough childhood, her collegiate experiences and her path to becoming an actor.” K’s favorite part was “When Viola and her sisters win the talent contest as children against all odds. (Close second favorite is when she wins the trip to Miami for her monologues and wins most promising/Rising Star accolades).” K gives this book 5 stars and states if is a great book but there is some language.
“I was told it Would Get Easier”, written by Abbi Waxman; review by K. The book is about “A mom and daughter embark on a college tour. The time together helps them reconnect and understand one another better.” K’s favorite part is “when Emily tells her mom, Jessica, she wants to be a cabinet maker and not go to a 4-year college. (And Jessica is proud and tells the world).”
“Secondhand Dogs”, by Carolyn Crimi; review by K. The book is about “A pack of adopted dogs live with Miss Lottie. Then Decker joins the pack and is sneaky and causes trouble. At the end, Decker finds a new home where he is loved.” K’s favorite part is “When Gus figures out the Decker is mean because he is sad and feels unloved and helps him.”
“Carrot the Parrot and the Island of Letting Go”, written by Theresa Wyatt Prebilsky (originally from Chrisman); review by K. The book is about “Myra taking a boat trip with Christopher, seeing her grandmothers, letting go of past hurts and learning who she really is.” Regarding Katie’s favorite part, K writes “I loved when Christopher calls her Mary – her forever name – derived from Myra.”
“The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo”, by Taylor Jenkins Reid; review by A. A writes “In the book Evelyn tells her life story and about all 7 of her marriages to husbands. The twist of the story is who she chooses to tell the stories to and why. In the end Evelyn takes matters into her own hands just like she did her entire life.” A’s favorite thing about the book? “That Evelyn owned up to all her mistakes and came clean in the end.”
“Night Road”, written by Kristin Hannah; review by A. The book “started with a young girl growing up with a drug addicted mom. The girl was in and out of foster care. The mom ended up dying from an overdose. The girl was placed with her aunt that she never knew existed. While living with her aunt she met a new friend. She grew very close to her but secretly even closer to her friend’s brother. After a while they told the friend/sister the truth. They all ended up the best of friends until one night in high school they went drinking at a party and got in a car accident. The sister died in the accident. The friend was driving and went to prison for 5 years. Shortly after being in prison she found out she was pregnant with the brother’s baby. She gave full custody to him. Once out of prison they reconnected and became a family.” A’s favorite part is “when they reconnected and became a family.”
“Heart Bones”, by Colleen Hoover; review by A. The book is about “Beyah lived a hard life with a drug addicted mom. After finding her dead from an overdose one day, Beyah called her Dad who she wasn’t very close with to live with him until college started. Over the summer Beyah became very close to her step sister and her boyfriend. And her boy friend’s friend Samson. Samson appeared to be rich and lived in his “father’s” rentals on a wealthy island. But the truth comes out eventually.” A’s favorite part is “That even though Samson didn’t turn out to be who Beyah thought she still forgave him and they lived a good life.”
