Does anyone have dinner guest anymore? I remember my Grandma Veda Hoult who always loved having friends and family over for dinner and she would cook a nice home cooked meal and set the table. She always had it figured out even up to the desert. Sometimes afterwards we played a good game of Euchre. She loved that and man could she set a table. It wasn’t the meal or the table that made it a good time for me it was being with my loved ones and talking and sharing with Grandma. Man, how I wish I could have a little time with Gram. I sure do miss her and Grandpa Bill.
There was a time when Jesus joined two of his friends for dinner. Two sisters Mary and Martha. When he got to their home, He sat down to tell them some stories, and Mary sat down at his feet and listened to every word. Martha, however ran around trying to make certain that everything was perfect for the dinner. She was cooking, cleaning up and getting the table set for a great meal. Eventually Martha gets fed up with Mary for not pitching in and complains to Jesus.
Jesus responds, by saying Mary has chosen the more important. The goal that Jesus had was for them to hang out together. It’s easy to confuse activity with the purposeful life that God wants for each one of us. Don’t get bogged down by the details; choose true engagement instead. Paper plates will be just fine. Don’t let the pursuit of perfection keep you from what matters most; T-I-M-E- and don’t forget to leave some time for Jesus, he just might want to spend some time with you. Enjoy life and maybe plan guests for dinner. -Troy Warner, lead Pastor Chrisman Christian Church
