Jalieanne Holvani
The popularity of tattoos has continuously risen through time. Currently, the practice of tattooing is booming, and it is estimated that roughly one in every seven people in America – over 39 million people total – have at least one tattoo.
Jalieanne Holvani, a Chrisman graduate, got her first tattoo when she was sixteen years old. “It’s the word ‘Love’ in Arabic,” Jalieanne said. “I got this tattoo for my grandpa who passed away and it’s on the back of my neck.”
Holvani’s love for tattoos has lead her to enter for a chance to be on the cover of ‘Inked’ magazine. Inked magazine is a quarterly magazine that began publication in 2004 and is a tattoo lifestyle digital media company that bills itself as the outsiders’ insider media.
Covering music, fashion, art, sports and the rest of the lifestyle of the tattooed, Inked, like Vice, has made the transition from the newsstand to digital media company and a brand that sits among GQ and Vanity Fair. Tattooed women like Kat Von D, Avril Lavigne, Diablo Cody, Eve and Malin Akerman have appeared on Inked’s cover.
Among the celebrities who have sat down with Inked are Ozzy Osbourne, Tracy Morgan, Slash, Kid Cudi and Billie Joe Armstrong.
Inked also covers tattoo artists; they immortalize the best in their Icon feature through which the likes of Don Ed Hardy, Horiyoshi III and Ami James have been honored.
Not only would she be featured on the cover, Jalieanne would also win $50,000. “Half of that is a cash prize and the rest is spent on flights, hotel, food and your professional pictures to be taken and put on the cover,” Holvani said.
With many styles of popular tattoos, Holvani finds herself drawn to traditional style patchwork tattoos. “I love traditional and patchwork for a bunch of different reasons. I mainly love the classic look to them. I also love that I can still see my natural skin color between my pieces,” Jalieanne said. “I also really love just black and gray tattoos. I’m not a huge fan of color tattoos on myself, but I love seeing them on other people.”
Jalieanne has quite a few tattoos in various places. Some of her tattoos include an angel, a pomegranate, snake, roses, a bear, love letter, skull, ‘777’ and ‘Death Before Dishonor’. Most of her tattoos have been done by Caaliyah Jones at Wabash Classic Tattoos. “Cal has done an amazing job and I hope she is just as excited as I am to have her work out there,” Holvani said.
Voting for the next Inked cover girl ends February 3rd. “I’m fighting to be in the top fifteen,” Jalieanne said.
After that, Holvani will focus on the top ten, then eventually first in her group. “Once you make it to first place, you go to semi-finals and finals to win overall. It’s like a bracket system,” Holvani said.
If Jalieanne is lucky enough to win, she already has plans for the prize money. “I would be putting the money towards my education, paying off my car and getting more tattoos,” Jalieanne said. “I’m sure my whole body besides my face will eventually be done. I always promised my mom I would never get a face tattoo.”
Even if she doesn’t win, Jalieanne plans to enter the next contest. “A lot of my friends and family saw they were doing to contest and told me about it. I’m glad they did. It has already been a great experience.”
Jalieanne is currently first in her group, but still needs votes to stay there.
