Chrisman Library News

January is one of the longest months of the year! And one of the coldest! What better way to spend a cold winter day than curled up with a good book! We have received more donations since the beginning of the year and we’re certain that you will find something to help pass the long, cold days. We are open Monday, Tuesday and Friday 1-5:30, and Wednesday/Thursday 1-7:00. You can always call us to make sure a book is available for you. (217-269-3011)
The Children’s book section has also grown in size due to patron donations and numerous books were purchased from a memorial donation. We have striven to get them cataloged and to place the “AR” levels and points on the books.
“AR” stands for Accelerated Reader and is a program that denotes reading levels and points to many of the books a child would read from our Library or their school’s library. There are tests associated with each book. Chrisman elementary school uses Accelerated Reader for every child attending school. Each child is required to earn a certain amount of points each month, in their reading level, which accounts for part of their academic grade for each semester.
Here’s what happens:
A child reads a book within their reading level. (Not necessarily the “grade” they are in) The book may have points associated with it.
The child then takes the test associated with the book and if that child passes the test, they accumulate the points toward their “points per month” goal.
This Library tries exceedingly hard to mark the books with the reading level and the points that go along with it to be able to point the child patron in the right direction, as well as their parents/grandparents/care giver.
Some parents have stated that this helps their child select the correct book for their level of reading. We will continue to do the “AR” search for the new books that come in and to get the existing books marked, as well.
